A few days before we made big birthday memories, we took Clay on his first camping trip. It was the only way I camp - in climate controlled cabins with nice bathrooms.
I love this picture of Clay's new fake displeased face. It's similar to his new fake laughing face.
It was a great weekend away and we're looking forward to a return trip to Lutheran Island Camp in October.

When we returned from camp, it was time to celebrate. Grammie and Grampie arrived the day before the birthday to help us party.
On Clay's actual birthday, September 5, we opened presents throughout the day, like this new book from Nana and Papa.
After we opened a present or two, we went out for breakfast. The waitress put a candle in Clay's pancake for him. It phased him not.

When Grammie and Grampie came the day before, they returned a book to Clay that we had forgotten at their house in June. The book is "The I Love You Book" and it was a gift from Stephen and Alyssa several months back. Even though Clay had lots of new toys around, he kept coming back to the book that had been lost but now was found. There's nothing like an old favorite.
In the evening, we headed outside because outside is Clay's favorite.
We go outside every evening if possible, but that night we let Clay play extra in the dirt. And crawl extra times up and down the steps.
We also tried to snap a few nice photos. Well, you can see how that went. When we're outside, Clay wants nothing to do with being held.
Freedom!

On September 6, the day after Clay's birthday, we had a picnic party in the park with a Mickey Mouse theme. I think Mickey Mouse is the only character Clay recognizes. It was a sunny, seventy degree day. We ate some of Clay's favorites - hot dogs, watermelon, and lemonade. We celebrated with friends, family, and neighbors that have been an incredible support to us during Clay's first year of life.
Grammie and Grampie were kind to share their date with us for the party. September 6 was also Grammie and Grampie's 39th wedding anniversary. We celebrated by transforming two of Clay's Mickey cupcakes (which I tried to be Pinteresty about, but they turned out more like frog bears) into a Bride Minnie and Groom Mickey.
Clay did eat most all of his cupcake, though he wasn't sure at first. It took him a good twenty minutes, but he was committed.
